Pelvic Return Joints

The process of installing a pelvic reconstructive joint is a surgical procedure aimed at changing the artificial pelvic joint that was previously installed due to its corrosion, or due to the occurrence of some complications related to the first joint replacement operation.

Cases of resorting to the process of installing a pelvic reconstructive joint

The surgeon resorts to performing a pelvic reconstructive joint installation in the following cases:

. Corrosion of the artificial joint due to the expiration of its expected life.

. Recurrent hip dislocation – which means the femoral head comes out of the acetabulum – as a result of direct trauma or sitting in incorrect positions, such as sitting on the floor.

. Functional failure of the joint, which means the inability of the joint to perform its function as a result of corrosion or breakage before the end of its life span. This is a problem that afflicts young people more often than adults due to excessive activity and movement, and increased chances of exposure to trauma.

. Purulent infection: The joint may become infected with a bacterial infection immediately after the installation of the artificial joint, which in some cases may require another surgery to reconstruct the pelvic joint.

How to perform a pelvic joint reconstructive operation

The process of reconstructing the pelvic joint is more complex than the surgery to install an artificial joint for the first time, as the surgeon does the following:

. Removal of the artificial joint or part of it.

. In some cases, the doctor needs to reconstruct parts of the bone through a procedure known as bone grafting.

. Remove or repair any damaged tissue around the joint.

. Installing the new artificial joint and securing it using surgical screws.

Complications of pelvic reconstructive surgery

Since hip joint reconstruction is a more complex operation than changing the artificial joint for the first time, it may cause some complications, including:

     . Dislocation of the joint.

     . Infection.

     . Formation of blood clots.

. The formation of clots in the lung arteries.

     . Leg length difference.

. Parts of bone growing out of place.

     . Fracture of the femur.

. Damage to the nerves and blood vessels surrounding the joint.

. Failure of bone adhesion to the metal joint.

We always advise patients to adhere to the regular follow-up program with the specialist surgeon, in order to ensure the success of the operation and to follow up on the condition of the joint by performing the necessary x-rays, in addition to evaluating the patient’s general health condition.
