Hip fractures
Causes, symptoms and treatment methods
Hip joint fractures are serious fractures that may cause serious life-threatening complications. What are the causes of this problem? What are the ways to treat it?
Causes of hip fractures
Hip fractures result from accidents or violent collisions, and aging increases the possibility of injury. Osteoporosis, balance problems, chronic diseases, and frequent use of certain medications all ultimately affect bone density.
Symptoms of hip fractures
Inability to get up when falling.
Inability to walk.
Feeling sharp pain in the hip or groin area.
The appearance of bruises and swelling in the hip area.
Shortening of the leg on the affected side.
The leg bends outward on the side of the affected hip.
Diagnosis of hip fractures
The doctor needs to perform x-rays to determine the location and type of fracture, using X-rays, MRI, or CT scans. Hip fractures are divided into two types:
Fracture of the femoral neck, which is the area just below the head of the femur.
Fracture of the intertrochanteric area, which is located far from the hip joint and is located where the upper femur protrudes outward.
Treatment of hip fractures
Treatment of hip fractures requires surgical intervention. Surgical options include:
Fracture restoration by installing plates or screws.
Partial joint replacement.
Total joint replacement in case of severe damage.
