Causes, symptoms and treatment methods

The femur is a strong bone that requires great force to break. What are the causes of fractures of the femur? What are its symptoms and how to treat it?

Causes of fractures of the body of the femur

Fractures of the body of the femur bone result from a severe collision resulting from a fall from above or exposure to accidents. They may also occur during a minor collision in the case of weak bone structure resulting from the following reasons:

     Getting older.

     Osteoporosis.

     Bone tumors.

     Rheumatoid arthritis.

Symptoms of fractures of the body of the femur

Feeling sudden sharp pain that may extend to the knee and ankle.

Difficulty standing and moving the leg.

Sudden swelling of the affected area.

Deformity and shortening of the length of the affected limb.

Diagnosis of fractures of the body of the femur

Fractures of the body of the femur are diagnosed by radiological imaging of the affected area to determine the type of fracture, and thus determine the optimal treatment method.

Methods of treating fractures of the body of the femur

There are two ways to treat a fracture of the shaft of the femur:

Non-surgical method: This method relies on splinting the fracture by making plaster pants that extend from the chest area to the bottom of the foot, to help hold the bones in place and heal them properly. This method is usually used in treating children’s fractures.

Surgical method: It is used in the case of unstable fractures that require surgical intervention to return the bone to its place and stabilize it using screws and plates.

The treatment method for fractures of the body of the femur depends on the degree of the fracture, whether in adults or children.
