Causes, symptoms and treatment methods

The knee is the joint where the tibia and femur meet. The stability of the joint is maintained by a group of tissues and ligaments that control the movement of the joint, and any of these bones may suffer a fracture that impedes movement. What are the causes of knee fractures? What are its symptoms and treatment methods?

Causes of knee fractures

Knee fractures usually occur as a result of direct and sudden collision with solid objects, such as hitting the ground, or following a car accident.

Factors that increase the chances of knee fractures include:

     Getting older.

     Osteoporosis.

     Malnutrition.

     Lack of exercise.

Symptoms of knee fractures

Hidden knee fractures appear as:

Bruising and sudden swelling in the knee area.

The injured person’s inability to load on the knee.

     Inability to bend the knee.

     Muscle spasms.

It is important to note that some types of knee fractures may be visible due to one of the broken bones protruding outward.

Diagnosis of knee fractures

Knee fractures are diagnosed through radiological imaging, using X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans, to determine the type and location of the fracture.

Treatment of knee fractures

Some knee fractures are treated by applying a splint to ensure the joint does not move, and the tissues heal on their own over time.

Some types of fractures may require surgical intervention to return the broken bones to their normal place and stabilize them by placing screws and plates to restore knee stability.
